Background

Following the industrial development plans of the Taiwan Government, Broadband Communications Industrial Technology Research Center (BCITRC) was built under National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) in 2013. BCITRC contained the most advanced equipment for the high-speed signal analysis and semiconductor fabrication, which enabled BCITRC to perform the leading-edge researches. The abundant research results from BCITRC were greatly recognized by the government and the industry, and helped BCITRC receive tremendous funding, with a total amount of over 100 million NTD.

The National Science and Technology Council (was then named Ministry of Science and Technology) in Taiwan started and funded the Special Project for Silicon Photonics Integrated Circuits between 2018~2022. Prof. San-Liang Lee, the chair of Heterogeneously-integrated Silicon Photonic Integration Center (HiSiPIC), was assigned as the project manager. Lots of front-edge silicon photonics relevant researches were funded and performed with the special project, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), Gyroscope, high speed transceivers, etc. The resultant know-how and technologies pushed the corresponding industrial development, and greatly impact the research activities of photonics in Taiwan.

The Ministry of Education in Taiwan starts the Featured Areas Research Center Program within the framework of the Higher Education Sprout Project in 2023. In order to continue the research momentum and results from BCITRC and the Special Project for Silicon Photonics Integrated Circuits, HiSiPIC is built, uniting tremendous renowned groups from the academia, Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), and the industry. HiSiPIC is anticipated to lead the world-class research activities in Taiwan, and be the cradle of talents for the fields of photonics and semiconductors
